Essential Oils Used at REVIVE! & their benefits

Following are aromatic essential oils – used by Tia Danielle at REVIVE! a hair spa – as well as their general descriptions and benefits related to skin and hair care. This list does not preclude REVIVE! from using any oil or product that has been determined as beneficial to natural hair and scalp care.

Basil Oil – (Ocimum basilicum) Basil oil is a powerful scalp stimulator. Basil oil encourages hair growth through the stimulation of blood circulation.

Carrot Seed Oil – Carrot seed oil is superior for hair and skin that is in need of nourishment, moisture and elasticity. It is an indicated treatment for alopecia areata, as well as fragile, brittle, and falling hair. Carrot seed oil is rich in beta-carotene, vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, essential fatty acids and other nutrients. It is calming to the skin and scalp; helps to prevent split ends; and strengthens hair naturally

Cedarwood Oil – Stimulates the scalp and promotes hair growth. Cedarwood also contains the highest amount of sesquiterpenes, which oxygenate at the cellular level and, in turn, causes release of toxins and promotes circulation.

Citronella Oil – It is very effective in eliminating excessive greasiness and then conditioning, soothing and softening the hair and scalp. Its antibacterial properties are helpful in reducing skin infections like acne, warts, boils, etc. The antiseptic nature of the oil also prevents the wounds and injuries from getting septic.

Coriander Oil – This oil is teeming with antioxidants, complexion-friendly minerals and skin boosting vitamin C. It’s also a potent anti-bacterial, antiseptic, anti-fungal, disinfectant, detoxifier and anti-inflammatory. Plus, it soothes and cools the skin.

Eucalyptus Oil – According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, eucalyptus oil was used in traditional Aboriginal medicines for treating fungal infections and skin wounds. Properties are: antibacterial, pain relief, dental health, and stimulating immune system response.

Hyssop Oil – Also known as the holy herb, it is noted in the Bible for its ability to cleanse and purify. Hyssop is astringent and antiseptic, making it a perfect natural treatment for problematically pimply skin – and it has superb healing properties (in part due to its ability to rev circulation), so it’s an excellent choice for treating itchy skin ailments and bug bites. 20th century physicians who used herbs in the United States used hyssop oil to soothe burned skin.

Lavender Oil – Considered to be one of the most effective natural treatments for the prevention of hair loss, lavender also helps treat the scalp for itchiness, dandruff and even lice. known to promote hair growth. It is also used to treat severe hair and scalp conditions such as alopecia areata. Along with the preventative effects, lavender oil is a powerful antiseptic that not only treats many scalp conditions, but also fights microbes, fungi and other viruses. It also has cell-regenerating properties.

Lemon Oil – (Citrus limon) Is high in Vitamins A, B and C; is anti-aging and promotes cell-regeneration; helps to restore natural ph level of hair; and can produce a healthy shine, especially on blonde hair.

Lemongrass Oil – The presence of Vitamin A in lemongrass makes it helpful for skin issues such as acne pimples. It helps to brighten the skin and eyes and clear up oily skin thus improving acne. Its antibacterial property is also valuable for skin infections. Lemongrass oil is used as an: analgesic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antiseptic, antiviral, astringent, bactericidal, carminative, deodorant, digestive, febrifuge, fungicidal, insecticidal, nervine, sedative, tonic. It has antidepressant properties and is thus beneficial for nervous and stress-related conditions.

Nettle Oil – (aka Stinging Nettle) Improves the appearance of the hair and is used as a remedy against oily hair and dandruff to treat irritation, itching, redness and other scalp and skin conditions.

Nutmeg Oil – Health benefits of nutmeg oil include its ability to treat stress, pain, menstrual cramps, heart disorders, indigestion, blood pressure, cough and bad breath.

Pink Grapefruit Oil – Citrus essential oils stimulate the hair follicles to promote hair growth; cleans the scalp and treats dandruff; and adds shine to hair.

Rosemary Oil – Promotes hair growth, unclogs pores, nourishes the scalp, prevents dandruff, and boosts shine. It is a powerful scalp stimulator effective to prevent hair loss and strengthen thinning hair. It is also used to condition hair and to bring out highlights in dark hair. The oil is known to dilate blood vessels and stimulate cell division. This, in turn, encourages hair follicles to produce new hair. The disinfectant properties of the oil also aid in preventing bacteria and other harmful organisms from thriving on the hair and scalp.

Sage Oil – Clary Sage soothes tight, itchy or irritated scalps; promotes estrogen balance and prevents thickening in the membrane tissue around the hair follicle that creates hair loss; and is thought of as one of the best essential oils for clarifying the scalp.

Sweet Orange Oil – Offers healing properties for cracked and dry skin. Due to possible allergic reaction and its limonene content, combine orange oil with other essential oils before application. Also known for its uplifting properties, orange essential oil is soothing to the mind and helps to relieve stress and treat anxiety.

If you are looking to add essential oils to your own beauty routine, please note the following:

  • As with all essential oils, never use them undiluted.
  • Do not take internally unless working with a qualified and expert practitioner.
  • Keep away from children.
  • If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier.
